In a significant leap for electric vehicle (EV) technology, CATL has introduced its groundbreaking swappable battery system, the “Choco-SEB.” These new batteries can be exchanged in just 100 seconds, a convenience that rivals the time it takes to refuel a gasoline vehicle.

This innovation marks a transformative step in making EV charging as seamless as traditional refueling, potentially making gas stations obsolete.

Changan Automobile has already acted on this exciting technology, delivering 1,000 units of the Oshan 520, the first EV equipped with these Choco-SEB batteries.

Changan’s Oshan 520 Leads The Way With Instant Battery Swap Technology

This vehicle has quickly gained traction in the market, with over 15,000 orders secured. The Oshan 520 is priced at 166,800 yuan (approximately $23,100) and boasts an impressive range of up to 515 kilometers (320 miles) on a single charge.

As part of this initiative, CATL has established 34 Choco-SEB battery swap stations in Chongqing, Changan’s hometown, with plans to rapidly expand to 1,000 stations across 31 cities in China by the end of 2025. This strategy aims to provide extensive support for the new battery technology, further facilitating the transition to electric mobility.

CATL has solidified its position as a global leader in the EV battery market, holding a 28.8% share—up from 26.9% the previous year. Collaborations with several major automakers, including GAC, Chery, NIO, FAW, and BAIC, also highlight the industry’s growing interest in the Choco-SEB technology, paving the way for the next generation of EVs.

With the ongoing evolution of the automotive landscape, CATL’s innovations are set to redefine how consumers interact with electric vehicles. As the technology matures, it can transform perceptions and usage of EVs, making them a more viable alternative to traditional gas-powered cars.
