Many internet connection issues stem from outdated or corrupted DNS information. Clearing your DNS cache is a fast and effective way to resolve problems like pages not loading, failed domain resolutions, or server connection conflicts. While often overlooked, this step can restore full browsing functionality with minimal effort.
Why clearing the DNS cache helps
Your computer stores DNS records—IP addresses linked to domain names—to speed up browsing. If these records become outdated or corrupted, they may block access to certain websites. This usually happens when a website changes its server or IP address. By clearing the cache, you force your system to retrieve updated DNS information.
How to clear the DNS cache on different systems
Windows users can clear their cache by opening CMD and running ipconfig /flushdns
, while macOS users need to enter a command in Terminal, which varies based on their OS version. On Linux, most distributions use sudo systemd-resolve --flush-caches
or similar commands depending on the distro.
Don’t forget routers and browsers
Home routers also cache DNS entries. Simply unplugging the router for 30 seconds and restarting it will refresh this data. Browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge have their own DNS caches too. These can be cleared via internal settings or special URLs (e.g., chrome://net-internals/#dns
).
When and why to clear your DNS cache
Common triggers include DNS changes, switching internet providers, or persistent connection issues. Instead of waiting for the system to refresh the cache automatically, a manual flush can often solve problems instantly.
