Thanos, often deemed the most formidable villain in the Marvel universe, first made his presence known in ‘The Avengers’ and played a pivotal role in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
His infamous snap marked a watershed moment in cinematic history, yet many fans have speculated whether he could have been thwarted before unleashing chaos upon the universe, particularly by his own father figure, Odin.
Odin, the father of Thor and Loki and portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, possessed significant powers, including dark magic, energy manipulation, and the ability to drain others’ abilities.
Could Odin Have Stopped Thanos Before Infinity War?
However, despite the acknowledgment of these formidable skills, the MCU showcased them sparingly. Odin’s death in ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ occurring just prior to ‘Infinity War,’ has sparked theories that Thanos might have strategically waited for Odin’s demise to execute his plan without interference.
Fans have noted that in the comics, Odin and Thanos had a showdown where Odin was on the verge of defeating the Mad Titan, only for the appearance of Lady Sif to prevent a conclusive victory.
This precedent raises questions about the potential outcome of a similar confrontation within the MCU, heightening discussions about the true extent of Odin’s powers compared to his comic book representation.
While speculation runs rampant about what might have happened had Odin been alive during Thanos’s rise, the reality is that Marvel chose to establish Odin’s absence before Thanos’s chaotic emergence. Some fans can argue that having Odin in the mix would have significantly altered the stakes during those crucial moments in the storyline.
However, with the complexities of storytelling and character arcs at play, the creative teams at Marvel may have determined that Odin’s death was essential for the narrative direction they intended to pursue.
