The second part of Dune is already a critical success. Even though it hasn’t officially premiered yet, it has already become the highest-rated film on IMDb, surpassing The Shawshank Redemption. It has received a 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and many say it is the equivalent of The Empire Strikes Back in the Star Wars franchise.

With this second part, Denis Villeneuve has already completed the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s original book. However, he doesn’t want to stop there. The writer continued the story of Paul Atreides and his descendants with The Messiah of Dune, and it’s something that the director wants to adapt to complete a trilogy that, in his view, would end with a perfect ending.

One more movie to complete a perfect trilogy

Now, Villeneuve has announced that he has already started writing the third part. There is still no green light from Warner, and obviously we will have to wait and see if the sequel is as well received by the audience as it has been by the critics. However, the filmmaker doesn’t waste time and, while he ensures that he wants to take this film without rushing so that quality is the most important thing, it is his main priority.

All the elements of the book are there. But I think the film adaptation is more tragic than the book. The way the second part ends… it would create a total balance to finish Paul’s story in the third part,” the director has said for Total Film.

The filmmaker also explained at the time that the entire cast needed for that third part would be willing to join the project again, including Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. However, we still have to wait and see if the franchise will end or become a trilogy.
