For a while, at Nintendo, they acted like they didn’t know what people were talking about when asked about Switch 2. “Us? A new console? I don’t think so, we just released ‘Super Mario Bros Wonder,’ our little one still has a lot of life left.” Nevertheless, rumors have turned into reality, and even those most inclined to cover up the supposed secret no longer pretend that its announcement is imminent.

Mamma mia, how easy!

Doug Bowser, the president of Nintendo with the best possible last name for the role, is still not ready to spill all the beans and unleash the craziest batch of rumors. However, he has talked about the transition between the Switch and the upcoming console (which we currently refer to as “Switch 2,” but it will clearly have another name). Specifically, he has mentioned that Nintendo accounts will be essential to ensure everything goes smoothly.

“In the past, with every console transition, we introduced a new account system. The Nintendo Account will allow us to communicate with our players if and when we transition to a new platform, to help facilitate that process.” In other words, a way of saying, “We’re not saying we’re releasing anything new, but just in case we do, transitioning will be incredibly easy, you’ll see, wink, wink.”

Bowser (the president, not the lizard monster) has continued to emphasize the same theme: “Our goal is to minimize the slump that you normally see at the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. I can’t talk about the possible features of a new platform, but the Nintendo Account is a strong foundation for that communication as we make the transition.” If you haven’t created one yet, you won’t get a bigger warning.

Unintentionally, Bowser seems to have said something many of us have been waiting for a long time: if Nintendo Accounts are so important, and he repeats it so insistently… could it be because the new console is backward compatible with the previous one? We’re keeping our fingers crossed, even though it’s currently like trying to hit a target in the desert. Come on, Nintendo, tell us more and make the internet explode. It won’t cost you anything.
