This year has been somewhat average for Disney. While the company continues to release various audiovisual products, it hasn’t been doing too well with some of its IPs. Marvel is in a bit of a slump, Star Wars is holding steady but after a fairly tense few years, and the latest Indiana Jones movie didn’t perform very well either. And with Pixar, the trend seemed to be heading the same way.
“Elemental,” the film by Peter Sohn that brings a world of elements to the Pixar aesthetic, premiered on July 14th, and it was dubbed the “worst Pixar debut in history.” Its numbers were so low that many thought it would be another failure for Disney, especially considering its exorbitant budget of $200 million; things were looking quite grim.
“Elemental” manages to become a success
However, the trend has completely changed. Over the weeks, “Elemental” has been making a comeback, and especially on an international level, it has become a success. Currently, it has already surpassed $450 million, and everything indicates that it will soon cross the $500 million mark.
This positions “Elemental” as the 12th highest-grossing movie of the year, and it might soon enter the Top 10 if it surpasses “Ant-Man” and “Mission Impossible.” But that’s not all; it has also achieved another record: it has surpassed “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” in the international box office. “Elemental” has already earned $307,760,971 in this box office, while “Spider-Man” remained at $306,916,102.
Certainly, the U.S. data tilts the scale in favor of Spider-Man, but “Elemental” hasn’t left theaters yet and could potentially earn more until the end of the summer. It’s clear that there’s still life for Pixar beyond Disney Plus.
