Elon Musk has expressed his discontent with the latest revelation from OpenAI, stating that the unveiling of GPT-4o, the company’s new artificial intelligence model, gave him “chills”. This comment arises in the context of a long-standing dispute between Musk and OpenAI, a company he co-founded but left in 2018 due to various differences.
In the GPT-4o presentation, held on Monday, the improvements in voice and vision were highlighted, allowing users to interact verbally and visually with the digital assistant. However, Musk was not impressed and even mocked the new AI, suggesting that OpenAI had turned ChatGPT into “an AI girlfriend” (a possible allusion to the movie Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix).
The dispute between Musk and OpenAI dates back years, since the entrepreneur left the company he helped found. Musk has openly criticized OpenAI for the “left-wing political bias [sic]” of ChatGPT, going so far as to describe several of its responses as “concerning”. In addition, he recently sued the company, accusing it of abandoning its principles after its partnership with Microsoft.

In 2023, Musk launched xAI, a rival AI company, and his own AI-powered chatbot, Grok, to compete with ChatGPT. In addition to making these mocking comments towards OpenAI and their new AI, Musk announced that Grok would receive a “significant update” soon.
