The saga of Dark and Darker has taken a new turn with the recent removal of the game from the Epic Games Store. This decision, made by Epic Games, is based on claims made by opposing parties in an ongoing legal conflict. However, the Legendary Status update, which offers paid options and bonuses for free game accounts, remains available for purchase, causing further confusion among players.
Legal disputes still unresolved and Epic Games washes its hands
The developer Ironmace communicated on their Discord that they are working to understand the exact reason behind this removal. The main controversy centers around Nexon, which has alleged that Ironmace used stolen code and assets from a canceled project in 2021 to develop Dark and Darker. Although a South Korean court ruled in favor of Ironmace regarding copyright infringement, it found that the company violated trade secrets, which will cost them nearly 6 million dollars.
Although Ironmace achieved a partial victory, the legal dispute does not seem to be over. Nexon has stated that it plans to go back to trial. This outcome may have influenced Epic Games’ decision to remove Dark and Darker from its platform, similar to a previous situation that led to the game being taken down from Steam. For now, Dark and Darker remains available on Steam, which represents a crucial safeguard for Ironmace.
Additionally, the study has mentioned that it is considering alternative solutions in case the game becomes inaccessible in the future. The developers plan to announce more information about this situation to their community in the near future. In the meantime, the outcome of this legal conflict is expected to continue affecting the availability of the game on different platforms.
