At 85 years old, Ridley Scott is experiencing one of the most vibrant moments in his career. Similar to Martin Scorsese, the filmmaker behind Blade Runner continues to tirelessly work on significant films despite his age. Currently, he’s working on Gladiator 2, but only after completing Napoleon, an extensive feature on the former emperor of France, which has just received its initial reviews.

In a few days, the movie will hit theaters before landing on Apple TV+ later. But what have the critics said about the film starring Joaquin Phoenix? The hype was sky-high, but it seems Ridley Scott hasn’t quite met the expectations. At least, that’s what many opinions from those who’ve already seen it suggest.

Mixed reviews for Napoleon

Here are some headlines and excerpts from major movie media:

“After all, Napoleon suffers from the same problem as its subject: The film’s ambitions are greater than what people demand, as Scott covers more ground than he can.” – Variety

“Phoenix commits to portraying Bonaparte as a petulant child throwing tantrums… The movie revels in undermining Bonaparte’s swagger at every turn.” – United Press

“The footage doesn’t exactly fly by, and one shudders to think how a director’s cut with an additional two hours will aid that, but Napoleon, much like its subject, quietly reaches its destination.” – Deadline

“Despite its strength, atmosphere, and well-choreographed battles, it’s a historically extensive tapestry that struggles to be convincing, especially when it veers away from the central couple.” – The Hollywood Reporter

“When watching Napoleon, one can’t shake the feeling that Scott was caught off guard. There’s no doubt he knew the film would be entertaining, but it seems he was surprised by just how far that entertainment would go.” – Indiewire
