Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the best manga of recent times. Created by Hiromu Arakawa, it managed to captivate millions of fans in the early 2000s, and many more with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, its definitive anime adaptation.

Now, it has been announced that Fullmetal Alchemist is back, but not with a new series, manga, or even a new live-action adaptation. It returns in a much stranger yet surprising way: as a Japanese stage play.

A play about anime

Square Enix and Marvelous have announced that they are producing a Fullmetal Alchemist stage play called “Hagane no Renkinjutsushi Zokushо̄” (Fullmetal Alchemist Sequel Chapter). As the name suggests, this is not the first stage play they have done for the series but rather a sequel to a previous play that was produced earlier this year and has been highly successful in Japan.

The premiere of the new stage play is scheduled for 2024, with Sachiko Ishimaru returning to direct and write the script. Actors Yōhei Isshiki and Ryōta Hirono will reprise their roles as Edward Elric. The first play was presented at the Shin Kabuki-za Theater in Osaka from March 8th to 12th and at the Nippon Seinen-kan Hall in Tokyo from March 17th to 26th.

The rest of the cast includes Shuto Mashima as Elric and Rin Okabe as Winry Rockbell. Jin Aoki and Takuma Wada also have a double role as Roy Mustang. Other cast members include Minami Tsukui, Metal Yoshida, Yūki Okamoto, Yūki Kimisawa, Motohisa Harashima, Sakurako Mizuki, Yutaka Abe, Keita Ōishi, Hikari Ono, Kurama Saō, Raima Hiramatsu, Taisei Kusano, Tomoya Hoshi, Shōgo Suzuki, Megumi Kuge, Mizuki Saitō, Himari Ogawa, Shiribiki Yuika, and Takurō Tatsumi.
