Google TV adds a feature that could upset many users

Google’s latest update for its smart TV platform has stirred controversy. While the company aims to make Google TV more interactive and personalized, not all users are pleased with the direction. The goal seems to be mimicking the mobile experience, but this move may backfire on the larger screen.

A mobile-inspired update that interrupts the viewing experience

One of the standout features presented at Google I/O 2025 is the new in-app rating prompt on Google TV. Users will now see pop-up notifications asking them to rate apps while using them—similar to what typically appears on Android smartphones. These windows let users select “Rate this app” directly from their remote and jump to the Play Store to leave feedback.

The problem is not the ability to rate apps, but the timing and intrusive nature of these prompts. Imagine watching a film or live broadcast only to be interrupted by a request to rate the streaming app mid-scene. While users can delay or redirect the prompt to another device, the interruption remains a source of frustration.

Personalization versus disruption

Google defends the feature as a way to empower users and gather app feedback for developers. However, the implementation raises the question: should TV interfaces follow mobile design principles? The nature of television viewing, usually more passive and immersive, clashes with such interactive interruptions.

For some, this might be a welcome chance to voice their opinions. For many others, it’s a needless disruption that breaks the flow of their entertainment.
