Elon Musk’s AI venture xAI seems ready to push Grok beyond chat responses and memes. Leaked code suggests the company is building a spreadsheet editor powered by its AI model, in a clear attempt to rival productivity tools from Google, Microsoft and OpenAI.
Grok could soon work inside your spreadsheets
Reverse engineer Nima Owji recently uncovered code indicating a new file editor in development for Grok, with a special focus on spreadsheets. This would allow users to interact with Grok directly while editing files, turning it into a kind of intelligent co-pilot for work tasks.
Although there’s no confirmation from xAI yet, the move hints at ambitions to turn Grok into a productivity assistant, not just a conversational agent. For now, it seems spreadsheets are the first step — documents and presentations might come later.
Competing with the AI giants
The leaked update fits into a broader plan from xAI to keep up with the fast pace of AI integration in everyday tools. Microsoft has embedded Copilot in Office 365, and Google’s Gemini is now present in Docs, Sheets and Slides. Grok’s integration would position X closer to this competitive ecosystem.
xAI recently launched Grok Studio, a tool that allows users to collaborate with the model on writing code, generating reports, and building games. Adding file editing is a natural extension of this strategy.
The real question is: how far will X go? Musk has stated his goal to build an “everything app.” If Grok becomes capable of helping us draft emails, fill out spreadsheets and write reports, it may quickly evolve from novelty to necessity.
