According to Collider, Kung Fu Panda has demonstrated its staying power at the box office as it approaches a major milestone in global box office. At the time of writing, Kung Fu Panda 4 has grossed $347 million worldwide, and is expected to surpass the $350 million mark in the coming days.

For those wondering what milestone Kung Fu Panda 4 has achieved, it is none other than surpassing the previous installment of the franchise, Kung Fu Panda 3, at the American box office. Kung Fu Panda 4 has already grossed $151 million in the country, compared to the $143 million of Kung Fu Panda 3.

Good numbers, but worse than previous franchise ones

Despite the mixed reviews, Kung Fu Panda 4 has delivered a solid box office performance so far. During its opening weekend, Kung Fu Panda 4 debuted at number 1 at the box office. This feat was particularly impressive considering it was competing with Dune: Part 2 (which has grossed over $626 million worldwide).

Kung Fu Panda 4 has also had to fight against big releases like Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire and the latest from the monsterverse: Godzilla vs Kong.

But let’s not fool ourselves, Kung Fu Panda 4 is still the least successful installment of the Kung Fu Panda franchise to date in terms of worldwide box office.

Kung Fu Panda grossed $632 million, Kung Fu Panda 2 grossed $665 million, and Kung Fu Panda 3 grossed $521 million. Although Kung Fu Panda 4 is still in theaters and therefore has time to surpass another Kung Fu Panda movie, it seems unlikely to achieve it, as it would need almost $200 million more to surpass Kung Fu Panda 3.

In any case, Kung Fu Panda 4 can be proud of how far it has come in national and worldwide box offices. An animated film that surpasses 300 million dollars is a great success.
