Believe me when I tell you that the job of a community manager is one of the most ungrateful ones out there. Not only do you have to deal with the worst of facing the public, but that public is hidden behind a screen. The result? Total catastrophe. This is what happened to a poor worker of ‘Helldivers 2’ who imagined a work disaster when she saw that her user was blocked on Discord. But no, it wasn’t a passive-aggressive dismissal, but something much funnier (at least for us).
Working in hell
Katherine Baskin, the CM of Arrowhead Games, had to send a tweet to Discord asking them to please unblock her account after it was blocked due to receiving hundreds of direct messages every day from players asking for help. You can imagine the continuous cascade of messages that she must have received. So many, that it was impossible to reply to one without two more coming in… and Discord’s bot detector had the brilliant idea of considering her a bot. Goodbye, account.
At first, Discord didn’t seem to sympathize with the worker, who insisted saying “Come on, I have work to do”. Absolute silence, even when supported by Johan Pilestedt, the creative director of the game. Two days later, Baskin returned to work ready to continue answering users’ questions of all kinds. Hopefully, half of them without insults in between. Those who tried it, know it.
