When How I Met Your Mother ended in 2014, it was soon announced that they would make a sequel with a similar premise but with a new point of view. In fact, there was even talk of Greta Gerwig (Barbie) as director. However, these plans quickly fell through as they couldn’t find a story appealing enough to pull it off, until Hulu came along and gave the green light to How I Met Your Father, which here can be seen on Disney Plus.
The series tells the story of Sophie, a mother played by Hillary Duff in her young version and Kim Cattarll in her senior version, who tells her daughter via video call the story of how she met her father. Thus, with some elements that update the story but maintaining the tone of the original fiction, we saw again a group of friends in search of what they want to be and with whom they want to spend the rest of their days.
Premiering on January 18, 2022 on Hulu -March 9 internationally thanks to Disney Plus-, the first season was a relative hit with audiences, so it was soon confirmed that it would have a sequel. Now, on April 19, the second season of the series arrives, which is divided into two parts. The first part lands now and will premiere a new episode every week.
What will happen in the second season of How I Met Your Father?
Sophie’s story was closed with a cliffhanger in the last episode of the original season, which will try to be closed in this new batch of episodes. In the first season, Sophie is in New York with her friends, and all of them are trying to find their place in the world; either for work, love or emotional stability.
Sophie has a relationship with Jesse that doesn’t end too well, and the rest of her friends aren’t doing much better either: Charlie leaves him with Valentina because of her tirade about having kids, Sid and Hannah get married by surprise and Ian shows up, after a first episode in which he participates, revealing that he has lost his job because his boss (The Captain of CCAVM) has divorced.
In this way, the plot remains open enough to be explored in the next season. Moreover, it won’t be just the main characters of the new series. Robin (Cobie Smulders) already appeared in the previous season, and it has been revealed that Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) will appear in this one in a role that will be transcendental.
If only for the cameos, this Disney Plus series is definitely worth keeping an eye on. Besides, as it usually happens in sitcoms -and if not, just ask The Big Bang Theory or The Office-, the first seasons are usually the weakest: they establish a tone that is then optimized and improved in the following ones.
Be that as it may, with How I Met Your Father we have the opportunity to encounter stories that directly concern us while serving as a reminder of why we loved How I Met Your Mother so much and how it became a phenomenon of the 2000s.
