As smartphones evolve, eSIM technology is becoming a standard across Android devices. Unlike traditional SIM cards, an eSIM is embedded in your phone and lets you activate mobile service digitally, making it easier to switch carriers or add numbers. While the process varies slightly between brands, the core idea remains the same: activate your mobile service without needing a physical SIM card.
What is an eSIM and why use it?
An eSIM, or embedded SIM, allows you to download carrier information directly to your phone. This makes it possible to skip trips to a store and activate a new plan from anywhere using Wi-Fi. With an eSIM, you can also use multiple phone numbers on the same device, separating work and personal lines without needing two phones. Though some phones still include physical SIM slots, more brands are pushing eSIM as the default, especially in flagship models.
Setting up an eSIM on Android phones
The steps to activate an eSIM depend on your phone brand:
- Pixel: Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM and follow the instructions.
- Samsung: Head to Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM, then either scan a QR code or search for eSIMs.
- OnePlus: Navigate to Settings > Mobile network > eSIM > Add eSIM and tap Set up an eSIM at the bottom corner.
Each interface may differ slightly, but on-screen prompts make the process simple.
Transferring your eSIM
Transferring an eSIM to a new Android phone has been streamlined thanks to tools from Google and Samsung. Just select “Transfer SIM from another device” during setup and follow the guided steps.
