The custom translation option for the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, introduced in the software update of iOS 17.2, changes how we translate content in various situations. A feature that provides us with great translation accuracy, but also unprecedented ease of use.

Language selection and configuration

Before using the translation function, the first thing is to select the language we want to translate to. We can do this through the built-in Apple Translation app. On the main screen of the app, we can select the languages using the selectors next to each language option. Once we have chosen the language pair, we are ready to configure the Translation option for the Action button.

To activate this feature on our iPhone 15 Pro, simply follow these steps:

  1. We open the Settings app on our iPhone.
  2. We enter Action Button.
  3. We scroll sideways to select the Translate option.
  4. We exit the Settings app.

How to use the iPhone for ultra-fast translation

To translate any phrase into the selected language, simply hold down the Action button on the iPhone and start speaking. We must keep the button pressed while we want the system to listen to us. The iPhone will transcribe what it hears and display it in the Dynamic Island alongside the translation. Then, it will play the translation so that we can listen to it.

Let’s pay attention, and that is very important, that the system can listen to phrases and conversations in either of the two languages we have chosen in the Translate app. This means that we can have a conversation with another person without having to use any app or select anything. We simply hold down the button for each phrase and listen to its translation.

The ability to translate any phrase with just the push of a button is particularly useful for travelers, students, and anyone learning a language. It’s a very simple way to establish communication in another language, made even easier thanks to the action button.
