Idris Elba, known for his charismatic performance as Stringer Bell in the acclaimed series The Wire, has shared a revealing confession about his relationship with the character that catapulted him to fame. In a recent interview on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Elba admitted that he has never watched his own performance in the HBO series, considering it a “rare” experience. “I haven’t seen it. I feel a little bad. It’s not that I’m not a fan; I was there. I did a show that was intense, real, and important, even though I didn’t understand it at the time,” the actor commented.
It’s rare to see The Wire because its character dies in it
Elba, who portrayed a scholarly and coldly calculating gangster in The Wire, reflected on how the role of Stringer Bell has impacted his life and career. “I feel that, in a way, when Stringer Bell died, a part of me also died with that character,” Elba expressed, highlighting the emotional attachment he feels towards his role. “It’s strange for me to see it again.”
The series The Wire, which has been acclaimed for its depth and realism, is considered one of the best of all time and continues to stand out on HBO Max. Despite its success, Elba feels distant from his legacy as an actor within the show. “I feel a bit like I’m outside the club,” he added, referring to his lack of participation in the celebration of the show as a viewer.
Stringer Bell, one of the most memorable villains in television history, has left an indelible mark on Elba’s career, who continues to be recognized for his masterful performance. The actor’s relationship with his character remains a fascinating topic for fans of The Wire and its impact on pop culture.
