We’ve all been in the middle of a phone conversation when suddenly, background noise makes it nearly impossible for the other person to understand a single word we’re saying. Fortunately, we have a resource we can use to make sure our counterparts hear us clearly, no matter where we are.
Voice isolation improves the quality of any call
In iOS 15, Apple introduced two new modes that altered audio capture using the built-in microphone of the iPhone: Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum. These features were initially limited to FaceTime calls and some third-party apps. Now, with iOS 16.4 and later versions, to be precise, the Voice Isolation mode is also available for regular phone calls.
Voice Isolation “prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise around you” during calls. This way, the iPhone will filter out all background sounds, allowing your voice to be heard clearly and crisply on the other end of the line. How can you activate it? Just follow these steps:
- Initiate a phone call.
- During the call, open your iPhone’s Control Center.
- Tap on the Microphone Mode.
- Select the Voice Isolation option from the list.
It’s as simple as that—your iPhone will take care of blocking external sounds and focus solely on your voice. And if you ever want to deactivate this feature, the process is the same, except you should select the Standard option from the list.
The Wide Spectrum mode, which intensifies the capture of all sounds around you, is not yet available for regular phone calls. However, it is available on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac when using FaceTime, Zoom, or other similar platforms.
With just a single button press, it’s now possible to dramatically enhance the clarity of our phone conversations. This feature is truly useful and a clear demonstration that small details can make a significant difference in our daily technology experience.
