Streaming is an all-out battle to produce the highest-quality series… and to rent your rivals’ best productions. If you can’t cover it all yourself, rent everything you can and more. The goal is to gain subscribers every month.
When a series doesn’t quite click or a project seems like it won’t perform as expected, major companies don’t hesitate to rent out the product to their rivals. That’s what Netflix, HBO, Disney, and other companies in the industry do.
Today, we have the case of Hulu, an American service with an extensive catalog (which in Spain is part of Disney+), which has decided to rent some of its best series to Netflix.
What Disney series will arrive on Netflix?
Lost and Grey’s Anatomy, along with a bunch of the best series from Hulu, are coming to Netflix. The two streaming services have signed a new deal for 2024 that will expand the range of programs available on both platforms.
For Grey’s Anatomy, the previous 19 seasons of the series will be available on both Hulu and Netflix. Hulu will also receive the upcoming 20th season, with episodes available online after airing on ABC.
As part of the agreement, which was first reported in early November, Disney is granting non-exclusive licenses for 14 series to Netflix. However, as reported by Variety, the deal has not been fully signed yet, so it’s not entirely confirmed. These are the series that are expected to arrive:
- The Wonder Years (January 1, 2024)
- This is Us (January 8, 2024)
- My Wife and Kids (February 5, 2024)
- The Resident (March 4, 2024)
- White Collar (April 1, 2024)
- Reba (May 6, 2024)
- Archer (May 13, 2024)
- How I Met Your Mother (June 3, 2024)
- Lost (July 1, 2024)
- Prison Break (July 29, 2024)
- The Hughleys (September 2, 2024)
- Bernie Mac (January 1, 2025)
- Home Improvement (February 1, 2025)
Regarding Grey’s Anatomy on Hulu, the previous seasons will be available on the service when Disney officially launches the Hulu app on Disney Plus, which is currently in beta. This combined app will allow Hulu users to access most of the Disney Plus content and vice versa.
It’s good to see licenses being granted to more top streaming services, but don’t expect Disney to offer their family jewels to their rivals.
CEO Bob Iger made it clear during the company’s latest earnings call that Disney had no intention of sharing its core brands, which are Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars.
