Cameras are a fundamental element of what makes an iPhone. In the iPhone 15, specifically in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, we already expect a significant technology upgrade, but it seems that it’s just the beginning. This is what a new report from Asia suggests.
Major changes in the scope of our photographs
According to a recent report from the Weibo account “Digital Chat Station” (via MacRumors), the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro Max could be the first to feature a periscope super telephoto camera, a significant step in improving optical zoom capabilities.
But what does this exactly mean? Traditionally, “super” or “ultra” telephoto labels have been reserved for cameras with focal lengths exceeding 300mm. Currently, both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro offer a focal length of 77mm. In other words, in terms of optical zoom, we could talk about a zoom of approximately 9x or 10x.
This advancement is expected to be possible through the transition to a periscope telephoto camera design, which would debut in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to rumors, the most significant change would come with the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which would not only enhance this functionality but also incorporate a larger sensor, measuring 1/1.14 inches, 12% larger than its predecessors. This enlargement could result in sharper images, greater dynamic range, and a significant improvement in low-light conditions.
If we add the natural bokeh effect that occurs in these images, we can expand the creative repertoire of future iPhone photography. This is great news considering that our phones have replaced dedicated cameras for almost every occasion. Of course, we cannot take anything for granted until we see the official announcement from Apple, but it is clear that both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 are bound to surprise us in more ways than one.
