Since its launch in 1993, DOOM has left an indelible mark on the video game industry, revolutionizing the first-person shooter genre and establishing itself as a true cultural icon. With recent releases like DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, the franchise’s legacy has remained more alive than ever, offering experiences that have redefined the landscape of shooting games. Both titles, along with the classics, are available on Xbox Game Pass, allowing subscribers to play them at no additional cost.
Game Pass, a good place to try games before buying them
The co-creator of DOOM, John Romero, has praised Microsoft’s subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, describing it as “the Netflix of video games.” In a recent interview, Romero commented that Game Pass is “great” because it removes access barriers and allows players to try titles before buying them. “I love it. Who doesn’t like Game Pass? It’s great because it’s try before you buy… one thing after another,” stated the current CEO of Romero Games, emphasizing that this subscription model “does not harm the companies” that develop the games.
The anticipation for the new title in the saga, DOOM: The Dark Ages, is increasing following the reveal of its release date and gameplay trailer. Scheduled for May 15 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, the game will not feature a multiplayer mode, demonstrating a clear focus from the developers on the campaign experience. “I am more confident than ever that Doom: The Dark Ages will be a success,” assured an industry analyst. Additionally, the future of the franchise is expected to continue ensuring more installments in the coming years, thus consolidating DOOM’s relevance in the current market.
