Over time, white appliances like washing machines, light switches, and microwaves tend to develop a yellowish tint, even if they’re perfectly functional. This discoloration, often caused by exposure to sunlight, grease buildup, and everyday wear, can make your appliances look older than they are. Fortunately, a simple trick from a home-cleaning expert offers a reliable way to restore the original white color with minimal effort.
A simple trick using household products
The method, revealed by a cleaning expert on social media, involves using oxygenated cream—commonly found in hair bleaching kits—as the main whitening agent. The process begins by testing the cream on a small, hidden spot to ensure compatibility. If all goes well, apply a thin, even layer across the yellowed surface using a paintbrush.
Wrap it and let it work overnight
After applying the cream, cover the treated surface with plastic wrap (such as kitchen film) to keep it in place. Let it sit for at least 24 hours. The combination of time and enclosed humidity helps the product work more effectively. After removing the film, wipe the area with a clean, dry cloth. For very aged plastic, repeating the process or extending the exposure may be necessary to fully restore the white tone.
Why plastics turn yellow
The yellowing of plastic occurs due to several reasons. Sunlight exposure, grease, smoke, and improper cleaning products all contribute to the chemical changes that discolor the surface. Over time, even the best-maintained appliances can lose their pristine finish. But thanks to this technique, you can give them a second life without replacing them.
