Threads is now available, but with a nuance: only users based in the United Kingdom or the United States can access it. For the moment, those of us living in Europe have to wait a little longer to enjoy the “Meta Twitter” (although there are several tricks to use Threads from other countries).

If you are one of those who have already started using Threads, you will surely have noticed the large number of celebrities that are already swarming around. There’s a reason: Meta has granted celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Gordon Ramsey early access to Threads. Brands have also wanted to join the party and Netflix, Warner Bros. and others can also be “read” there.

Although we still miss other great Instagram personalities such as the Kardashian clan, Selena Gomez or Messi, the truth is that it still has a long way to go. As of today, Threads already has more than 30 million registered users and the complaints have not been long in coming: Meta’s shady dealings with its community data or the feed full of suggested content are some of the most repeated.

Why hasn’t Threads arrived in Europe yet?

As we indicated at the beginning of the piece, Threads has been available since July 6, but only for the United Kingdom and the United States. What happened to Europe? A Meta spokesperson explained the reason: our laws.

Specifically, it has been due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). It is also the reason why Alphabet (Google’s parent company) has not brought Google Bard to our (technological) lands. For the time being, Meta and Google will have to adjust their data processing policies and others to comply with the European requirements. Will it take us long to see it?
