It sounds like the plot of a Disney after-dinner movie, but it really is the best result that could ever come out of an election. We are going to Idyllwild-Pine Cove, a California town of almost 4000 inhabitants among hills, full of tourists who go to do extreme sports and where, in its day, ‘Bonanza’ and an Elvis Presley movie were filmed. A normal town, if it weren’t for the fact that its mayor was, for years… a dog.

If Air Bud could play basketball (and a lot more if we listen to the sequels) and Pancho could be a millionaire dog, why couldn’t Max become mayor? Sadly, there’s a catch. And that is that Idyllwild has no government being a community governed by its county rather than having a full-fledged mayor. So a local animal welfare organization decided that, rather than have no mayor, it’s better to have a dog governing. And if you’re going to have a mayor too, that is. A furry one is always the best decision.

The winner, among fourteen dogs and two cats, was Max, a Golden Retriever who lasted only one year in power before passing away. Then, at eleven weeks old, Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller II, or his son, known as Mayor Max II, came to power. No elections were held again: the people were so happy with Max being a good boy, walking the streets and being petted that they decided to make him mayor in perpetuity. The best possible choice.

Max rode in his official car with an adorable little tie waving to all the people. According to his office, his only goal was always “to make the world a better place by giving unconditional love and doing as many good things for others as possible“. I already want to change the mayor in my town, can I get a dog instead, please?

It should be said that his two deputies were Mikey and Mitzi, his siblings, but no one complained about this strange nepotism. On July 30, 2022, Max II passed away after nine years of being a good boy and his place was taken half a year later by Max III, who now rules the city with an iron paw after the citizenry asked for what anyone in their right mind would ask for: to continue to be governed by a good boy.
