With the arrival of each new version of an operating system, some users prefer to wait before updating, often because they don’t see the value in the changes and new features of the system. But, as we’ve mentioned several times, updates contain much more than meets the eye. macOS Sonoma, the latest version of the operating system for our Macs, brings with it 61 compelling reasons to convince us to update as soon as possible: its security patches.
Security as the top priority
While a visual refresh and the addition of features like interactive widgets or Game Mode are appealing, what should also catch our attention are the security fixes. Apple has worked diligently with developers and security experts to close even the slightest vulnerability that could jeopardize our security and that of our data.
Among the 61 security patches, there are fixes for a variety of system components and applications. For example, a vulnerability in Airport that could have allowed an application to read sensitive location information has been addressed. Similarly, vulnerabilities in the AMD engine that could have allowed arbitrary code execution with kernel privileges have been identified and fixed.
Another critical component that has received significant security fixes is the Apple Neural Engine. This component is essential for artificial intelligence and machine learning tasks on Apple devices. Vulnerabilities here could have allowed applications to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges or even access kernel memory, something that is no longer possible after installing macOS Sonoma.
While the new features and improvements of macOS Sonoma, along with those of iOS 17 and watchOS 10, are definitely an incentive for many, the security fixes should be the reason not to hesitate in updating as soon as possible. In a world where digital security is paramount, having a robust operating system free of known vulnerabilities is essential. So, if you were thinking of waiting to install macOS Sonoma, you might want to reconsider. We have 61 reasons to update as soon as possible.
