Mötley Crüe is one of the most mythical rock bands in history. With hits like Home Sweet Home, Kickstart My Heart or Girls, Girls, Girls, Girls, they blew up the eighties and managed to catch up with other hard rock bands like Bon Jovi, Guns N’Roses or Black Sabbath.

However, the band had many controversies since its founding in 1981. One of the most talked about has to do with the leaked sextape of the band’s drummer, Tomy Lee, with Pamela Anderson. The controversy reached such a point that a year ago Disney Plus released Pam & Tommy, a series that reflects the story of this cursed video with a comedy tone.

But this was not an isolated case. The band used to repeat problems of drugs, alcoholism, extravagances and all kinds of controversies that made their fame increase beyond the musical. And the situation was (and is) so problematic that Mick Mars, guitarist of the group since its foundation, has denounced his bandmates.

Mick Mars goes on the warpath against the group

Mars has been officially retired for a few years now, but apparently his departure was far more problematic than it was made out to be. In the lawsuit he has filed, the guitarist’s lawyer alleges that the rest of the band tried to oust him when he announced he was retiring from touring but wanted to remain a member. He further explains that Nikki Sixx, Mötley Crüe’s songwriter and bassist, “gaslighted” him for years making it clear that he was not up to par as a guitarist.

For his part, Mick Mars has not taken long to be silent, and in an exclusive for Variety has made clear what he thinks about what happened:

“Sometimes things are misrepresented by other members of the band. I really don’t know if I should say this, but… those guys have been hammering me since ’87, trying to replace me. They haven’t been able to do it because I’m the guitar player. I helped put this band together. The name of the band is what I came up with. It’s my ideas and my money that I got from someone who supported me to start the project.”

For its part, Mötley Crüe has released an official statement making it clear that the lawsuit has been “unfortunate”, and have added an agreement signed in 2008 in which all agreed that “In no event shall the resigning shareholder be entitled to receive any amount attributable to live performances”, which was something that Mars was apparently demanding.

Of course, so many years after having formed a legendary band, it is a shame that things have ended this way for the guitarist and founder. However, considering the great controversies they have been involved in over the years… little has happened.
