Microsoft leaves thousands of PCs without updates worldwide: What we know about the error

In an unusual twist for a global tech leader, Microsoft has acknowledged a critical update error preventing many Windows 11 devices from upgrading to version 24H2. While update failures are not new, this case stands out because the issue originates from Microsoft’s own code, and no fix has yet been issued.

The update fails with error code 0x80240069

The issue, marked by error code 0x80240069, affects systems attempting to update from versions 22H2 and 23H2 to 24H2 through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Microsoft flagged the bug in late April but has not provided any technical explanation or workaround. The problem causes update downloads to stall or stop entirely, sometimes showing the message: “The wuauserv service terminated unexpectedly.”

WSUS environments most affected

The bug primarily affects enterprise users relying on WSUS, a tool widely used in corporate IT environments to control and deploy updates. Home users are less likely to be impacted, although scattered reports on forums suggest some consumer-level machines may also experience the problem.

No solution yet, only recommendations

Microsoft has only stated that devices with the April 8, 2025 security update (KB5055528) or later may be blocked from updating via WSUS. While engineers are investigating the source of the failure, no patch or updated instructions have been published. For now, users are advised to back up important data and wait.

Enterprise disruptions raise concern

Though not widespread among general consumers, this failure could severely disrupt IT departments responsible for large-scale PC maintenance. Until Microsoft issues a resolution, affected systems remain stuck on older versions.
