Little by little, we are learning more details about what the Minecraft adaptation to the big screen will be like. Its director, Jared Hess, has spoken extensively about the project and has also confessed what is one of his greatest fears: the reaction of the fans.
The movie, produced by Warner, will feature an eclectic cast. Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Emma Myers will be the actors lending their voices to Minecraft. As for the plot, little is known. However, there is a high probability that it will adapt the main storyline of the game, where a villager defeats the Enderdragon.
In an interview with the Salt Lake Tribune, Jared Hess has promised that the Minecraft movie will be “fun and ridiculous.” However, he admits that he deeply fears messing up with Mojang’s game and facing the fans’ reaction. Specifically, he alluded to Sonic and its early trailers: “I think anyone working with any IP just wants to avoid a situation as ugly as Sonic’s.”
Casually, Hess reminds us (against our will) of Sonic’s first public appearance. Its design, which approached the uncanny valley, flooded the Internet with memes and mockery. The criticisms received led to a radical redesign of Sonic’s appearance and gave rise to the one we know today.
However, it is likely that the Minecraft movie will not have such a peculiar look. At least not with Grant Major, a production designer who has worked on franchises like The Lord of the Rings. In a movie that was assumed to be entirely digital, the use of physical props could serve as a differentiating element.
The Minecraft movie has been in pre-production for almost a year now and is expected to see the light at some point in 2025.
