Alexandre Dumas is one of the most prolific writers when it comes to adapting his work to the small or big screen. With nothing to envy to Stephen King, the author has just been adapted again for the new version of The Three Musketeers that comes directly from France, with Eva Green as Milady.
Even so, barely a week after its premiere in theaters, another Dumas adaptation arrives in Spain. It is Montecristo, a new Movistar Plus series starring actor William Levy. However, it has nothing to do with Dumas’ classic work, because although it takes its story and mystery as a reference, it turns it into a series set in the 21st century and the technology sector.
Count Monte Cristo of the 21st Century
The Movistar Plus series presents a Montecristo who works as a businessman in the technology sector. However, no one knows his origin, something that generates a halo of mystery around him that soon begins to arouse envy and disputes. In addition, the businessman Fernando Álvarez Mondego, related to the Spanish aristocracy, sees him as a rival to beat.
It will soon be discovered that the mysterious reason Montecristo has appeared in the company is to wage a vendetta that has been decades in the making, and that there is much more to hide behind the apparently affable face of the protagonist. The series talks about the importance of bringing back Dumas’ story and adapting it to a 21st century that hasn’t changed our drives that much.
“That’s where you have to know how to master the animal you carry in your heart. It’s as if you carry a bull in your heart and you have to know how to tame it, because if you don’t, it carries you away. At some point in our lives we have all identified with the story of the Count of Monte Cristo,” says William Levy.
The Cuban actor is the star of this series, who rose to fame with The Scent of Passion, a Netflix telenovela. He is joined by a cast that includes stars such as Roberto Enríquez, Esmeralda Pimentel, Silvia Abascal, Itziar Atienza, Guiomar Puerta and Juan Fernández.
