Bing Gets Even More Ad-Friendly: What This Means for Search Engine Marketers

The new and improved Bing is pretty cool. Whether on its website, in the Microsoft Edge browser or in the apps for mobile devices, you can chat with a chatbot-like artificial intelligence capable of answering your questions with natural language and using three different conversation modes. If you add to that the fact that it is “free”, you get a very rounded AI capable of using the Internet to give you very complete answers. Yes, you read that right: “free” with quotation marks.

While Microsoft was already placing ads in search results when you searched for something to buy or as sponsored links since the launch of the new Bing preview in February, the company has now confirmed to The Verge that the Bing chatbot will include even more ads.

“Yes, ads will be shown in the new Bing, specifically in chat (just like in traditional search results),” Caitlin Roulston, Microsoft’s director of communications, told The Verge. “Since the new Bing is in preview phase, there may be some variability in how it is currently displayed. We are still exploring new opportunities for ad experiences and will share more over time.”

Mind you, ads don’t appear very often, to the point that I myself (yes, the copywriter) have tried a thousand different ways to get Bing to show me ads, but to no avail. When you want to see ads and they don’t show them, a classic (irony). Still, other users have been able to see the Bing chatbot ads, like Debarghya Das, who got two ads as sources when asking for cheap Honda vehicles.

At the moment, there are more questions than information: When will we see more advertising in Bing? How many ads at most will we see in each conversation? Will advertising appear in any query or only in some of them? We will have to wait and see how ads are implemented in the Bing chatbot. In the meantime, enjoy an (almost) ad-free experience.
