Game of Thrones is one of the most important series, if not the most, of this century. The fiction based on the books by George R.R. Martin managed to surpass all kinds of records in terms of popularity and quality at the time, and HBO has wanted to take advantage of it with spin-offs that are up to par. Certainly, this has worked very well with House of the Dragon, and it seems that it will also continue its path with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

But the streaming platform does not cease in its path to continue taking advantage of the vast world offered by Martin, so it is already developing other new series of A Song of Ice and Fire. This time, in animated format, which makes production and subsequent release much easier.

Animation: the future of Game of Thrones

Through his personal blog where he shares all kinds of news about his writings, George R.R. Martin has commented that he has new news about Game of Thrones and its spin-off series. After confessing to being a fan of Blue-Eyed Samurai, he has explained that he has several related ideas to expand the universe of his saga through animation. There are three total ideas that he is working on hand in hand with HBO, and his exact words have been the following:

“None of them have the green light yet, but I think we are close to taking the next step with a couple of them. When this last round of development started a few years ago, we had four ideas for animated series, with some great talents. Writers’ rooms and conferences, sketches and scripts followed in due course… but unfortunately, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved.”

In addition to these two series that are in development and awaiting approval, another one is added that was initially proposed as a live-action idea but ultimately turned into animation: Nine Voyages, a prequel about the adventures of Corlys Velaryon through Essos and the seas of the world.

“Budget constraints would have made the live-action version excessively expensive, as half of the show would be at sea and there would be a need to create a different port every week, from Marcaderiva to Lys or the Basilisk Islands, Volantis, Qarth… well, over and over again. There’s a whole world out there. And we have more possibilities to show it all with animation. So now we have three projects in the works,” the writer concluded.
