Amid a turbulent commercial landscape, the video game industry is affected by the new tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration. Recently, the U.S. government announced an additional 10% tax on almost all imports, which has led Nintendo to temporarily suspend pre-orders for its upcoming console, the Nintendo Switch 2, in the U.S. and Canada. And of course, users are preparing themselves for the price to be higher than announced.
The price could go up even more… how much would you pay for the Switch 2?
Originally, Nintendo planned to open reservations on April 9, but the company decided to pause this strategy due to the uncertainty caused by the new taxes. This decision has extended to Canada, as Nintendo seeks to ensure that both regions have an aligned pre-purchase period. The company issued a statement indicating that its intention is to allow users in both countries to purchase the console on the same day, although this wait will now be prolonged.
The production of the Nintendo Switch 2 is taking place in Vietnam and Cambodia, countries that will face tariffs of 46% and 49%, respectively, significantly increasing the cost of exporting the console to the U.S. market. The launch of the Switch 2, which is scheduled for June 5, 2025, has not changed, but the recent taxes cast a shadow of uncertainty over demand, especially since Nintendo does not plan a price reduction in the short term.
With these changes, the console could become a more expensive item than anticipated, which could influence consumers’ purchasing decisions. The current situation raises questions about the future of the Nintendo Switch 2 and players’ willingness to adapt to a constantly changing market. Meanwhile, fans are on the lookout for any additional announcements from the company regarding its launch strategy and pricing.
