NEMA has published its new Energy Export Permission standard for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), which defines the technical parameters necessary to enable bidirectional charging of electric vehicles (EV).
This advancement will allow EVs to transfer energy back to the electrical grid, transforming these vehicles into mobile energy storage units that can power homes, buildings, and the grid itself.
The implementation of this vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-building/home (V2B, V2H) technology will allow electric vehicle owners to store energy during low demand hours and sell it during consumption peaks, thus generating potential profits.
From electric car to energy battery for our home
Patrick Hughes, Senior Vice President of Technical Affairs at NEMA, emphasized the importance of this standard to improve the resilience of the grid, especially at a time when extreme weather events are more common.
In addition, the new standard not only aims to optimize profitability for EV owners but also enhances the safety of installations. David Kendall, Director of Industrial Affairs at ABB, emphasized that these new regulations will contribute to a safer installation and the stability of the electrical grid, maximizing consumers’ investment in their electric vehicles.
In a climate where natural disasters are becoming more frequent, the ability of homeowners to integrate solar systems and energy storage becomes crucial.
With the new NEMA standard, the foundations are laid for a more sustainable and resilient future, allowing EVs to not only be a transportation option but also a comprehensive solution for energy management in the home and community.
