OpenAI has released its latest model, the ChatGPT-4o Mini, described by the company as “our most cost-effective small model.” Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared the details about this model on Twitter, highlighting its price and great efficiency: “15 cents per million input tokens, 60 cents per million output tokens, 82% MMLU, and fast.” The CEO also added that he believes people are going to really enjoy using the new model.
Despite the good reception of ChatGPT-4o Mini, some users pointed out to Altman the need to change the naming system of the ChatGPT models, which has remained constant over the years. “You urgently need a name scheme renovation,” commented a user on Twitter. Altman, acknowledging this need, replied: “lol yes we do.”
The ChatGPT-4o Mini is one of the most efficient artificial intelligence models from OpenAI. According to the published details, it is a compact model and offers minimal latency, which means it can generate responses quickly. Additionally, it will be compatible with text, image, video, and audio, including image processing. It also supports a context window of 128K tokens and can handle up to 16K output tokens per request, with a database updated until October 2023. A highlight is that non-English text handling is now more cost-effective thanks to the improved tokenizer shared with GPT-4o.

OpenAI has emphasized its commitment to safety through its Preparation Framework, which uses automatic and human evaluations. To ensure the safety of the model, the company has also relied on the collaboration of 70 external experts from various disciplines to detect potential risks, a measure that highlights the company’s effort to maintain high standards of safety and effectiveness in the development of its AI models.
