When Outlook.com first debuted back in July, one of the biggest omissions was the lack of IMAP support. Users had to settle with using POP3 or Microsoft’s own Exchange Active Sync protocol to use with third-party email clients. Today, Microsoft has rolled out IMAP support for Outlook.com, which means the email service can finally be used with more services.

Microsoft cites better battery-life, near real-time actions, and network efficiency as reasons for bringing IMAP support to Outlook.com. Sites and services like TripIt, Slice, Unroll.me and OtherInbox are now supported and can be integrated into your Outlook.com email. For example, TripIt can detect when you have travel confirmations and will automatically import them into its mobile app.
