Blizzard has announced that Overwatch 2 will receive “revolutionary changes” later this year, although the exact nature of these modifications is still unknown. To detail the updates, the company will hold a livestream titled Overwatch 2 Spotlight on February 12. This broadcast will also showcase new heroes and maps that will be added to the game throughout the year.
Is the Return of the Classic 6v6 We’ve Been Waiting for Here?
In recent times, Blizzard has been experimenting with a 6v6 format, similar to the original Overwatch, due to community reactions following the transition to a 5v5 format. While there is no confirmation that this change will be part of the updates, there is a possibility that the return to 6v6 will be discussed during the livestream.
The most recent season of Overwatch 2 introduced Hazard, a new tank hero, and a crossover with the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which has reignited players’ interest. However, this enthusiasm comes at a time when competition in the hero shooter genre is intensifying, particularly with the successful launch of Marvel Rivals, a title that has reached the astonishing figure of 20 million players in just two weeks.
Marvel Rivals, which offers mechanics similar to those of Overwatch and features characters from the Marvel universe, has proven to be a formidable competitor. With promises of regular expansions that include new characters, the new game has captured the public’s attention, which could impact the player base of Overwatch 2. As the February 12 livestream approaches, Overwatch players will remain attentive to news about the game’s future and what measures Blizzard will take to recover and expand its community.
