Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 5 sales figures for the past three fiscal months, spanning from April 1 to June 30, 2023. The numbers speak for themselves: not only has it been the best fiscal quarter for PS5 compared to previous ones, with 3.3 million PlayStation 5 units sold, but it has also propelled the console’s total sales past the 40 million mark. To be precise, a grand total of 41.7 million consoles have been sold worldwide.
This PlayStation 5 sales figure also reveals a significant detail: at the moment, PS5 is maintaining one of the strongest sales paces of all PlayStation consoles to date. Thus, PS5 continues to break records day by day, only surpassed by the PS4 within the same timeframe (which had reached 43.7 million at this point). Considering the stock shortages of the console until the past holiday season, this data is very positive.
Sony acknowledges that sales were lower than expected during this quarter, but they have surged since the announcement of the summer price reduction in July. It’s a case of what’s been taken from one side has been given back from the other, so to speak.
In terms of software sales, a total of 56.5 million video games have been sold between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (9.3 million more games than the previous quarter). Out of this total, a whopping 72% is digital, a remarkably high percentage (3 out of 10 games sold are physical), but it has decreased by 7% compared to the previous quarter.
As a curious note, subscriber data for PlayStation Plus has not been revealed. Usually, this information is provided, so we have to rely on the latest data from May of this year, which indicated 47.4 million users subscribed to the service.
Sony has raised its revenue forecast for the entire fiscal year, increasing it from 3.9 trillion yen to 4.1 trillion yen. It seems that the goals of the Japanese company are quite ambitious.
