The series The Chosen is set to premiere its highly anticipated fifth season in theaters, titled The Chosen: The Last Supper (Part 1), scheduled for April 2025. The series will first premiere in theaters for those who wish to enjoy the most immersive experience, and will later be available for streaming, in the US on Amazon Prime Video and in Spain on Movistar Plus.
Jesus never prayed for Judas
However, the return of the series has been surrounded by controversy due to a preview released at the end of 2024, which shows a conversation between Jesus, played by Jonathan Roumie, and Judas Iscariot, played by Luke Dimyan. In this brief clip, Jesus tells Judas: I will pray for you, a statement that has sparked criticism for its apparent lack of fidelity to the Scriptures. Several religious leaders, such as pastors Gabriel Hughes and Shane Idleman, have questioned this interpretation, arguing that there is no biblical basis to support that Jesus prayed for Judas.
Hughes, from the Reformed Baptist Church of Providence in Arizona, has pointed out that the scriptures never indicate that Jesus made such a prayer for his traitor. For his part, Idleman emphasizes that, although creative adaptations of biblical stories may be necessary, he believes that this particular scene strays too far from the original accounts.
Despite this controversy, The Chosen remains one of the most successful religious-themed series in recent years. The production has managed to attract a wide audience, highlighting the viability of religious narratives in the context of contemporary entertainment. With its new scheduled release, the series reaffirms its cultural impact and its ability to generate meaningful conversations about its representation of faith.
