As the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 gears up for its June 2025 launch, handheld gaming enthusiasts are comparing it to the well-established ASUS ROG Ally series. Both devices promise a premium portable experience, but their goals and capabilities are fundamentally different. Here’s how they stack up across key categories.
Performance and specs
The ROG Ally X clearly leads in raw performance, with up to 24GB of RAM and 2TB SSD storage, paired with AMD’s Z1 Extreme chip. The Switch 2, with a custom NVIDIA processor and DLSS support, promises smoother visuals than its predecessor, but it’s still playing catch-up in sheer horsepower.
Display and controls
The Switch 2 sports a larger 7.9-inch 120Hz touchscreen and supports 4K output when docked. In contrast, the ROG Ally models have a smaller 7-inch panel but still deliver 1080p at 120Hz with AMD FreeSync. What sets the Switch 2 apart is its detachable JoyCon controllers, offering unique flexibility and multiplayer options.
Operating system and games
Running Windows 11, the ROG Ally behaves like a compact PC, giving users access to major game libraries, emulators, and productivity apps. The Switch 2, on the other hand, is all about exclusives—from Mario and Zelda to upcoming titles like The Duskbloods—which might be decisive for fans of Nintendo’s ecosystem.
Battery life and ergonomics
The ROG Ally X wins on endurance, lasting up to 8.5 hours thanks to its massive 80Whr battery. Still, the Switch 2 remains lighter and more portable, especially with the JoyCon grip or optional Pro Controller.
If you want power and freedom, go with the ROG Ally X. If you value exclusives and versatility, the Switch 2 is hard to beat.
