Sora, the video generator from OpenAI is now available: how to try it

As part of the 12 days of OpenAI launches, the company has taken a huge step forward in the world of artificial intelligence with the public release of Sora, its video generation model, a tool that aims to change the way we create and edit content. Since its initial presentation in February, Sora had been available only to some researchers, now, finally, we can access this tool as part of the ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro subscriptions.

What is Sora and what can we do with it

Sora is an artificial intelligence model that allows us, primarily, to generate videos from simple text descriptions. Its functionality goes far beyond creating content from scratch, however. The OpenAI tool has integrated options that allow us to edit, transform, and personalize videos in a simply astonishing way.

Among the most notable features of Sora, we find these:

  • Remix: A tool to modify elements of an existing video, such as replacing an object, removing it completely, or simply presenting it differently. For example, we can remove a person from a shot or add trees to a scene.
  • Re-cut: Allows us to find and extend the best moments of a video, and with those frames, extend the video and narrative by naturally completing a scene.
  • Storyboard: A tool to organize and structure shots in a customized timeline, making editing much more accessible.
  • Loop: Ideal for creating looped videos that repeat seamlessly for, for example, social media or presentations.
  • Blend: Combines two videos into a single smooth sequence, eliminating abrupt transitions.
  • Style Presets: Offers predefined styles to customize the aesthetics of our videos. Additionally, we can share our presets with the community to inspire others.

How we can access Sora

Access to Sora is integrated into the paid subscriptions of ChatGPT, although with certain limitations depending on the chosen plan.

  1. With ChatGPT Plus: For a cost of 20 dollars per month, we can generate up to 50 priority videos with a maximum resolution of 720p and a duration of up to 5 seconds. It is important to note that the videos include a watermark.
  2. With ChatGPT Pro: For 200 dollars per month, this plan allows us to create up to 500 priority videos with resolutions up to 1080p and durations up to 20 seconds, in addition to having unlimited generation in relaxed mode and the ability to download videos without watermarks. We also have the option to work on up to five generation projects simultaneously.

Currently, Sora is available in all countries where ChatGPT is available, except in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Europe, due to regulatory difficulties. From what we have been seeing, access —especially now, with the launch— may be intermittent due to high demand.

According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, new sign-ups to use the tool are intermittently disabled, so trying to access several times a day increases our chances of gaining access. Finally, OpenAI has explained that it is working on a pricing model more suited to different types of users, planned for next year.

Sora represents a very important evolution in the field of video editing powered by artificial intelligence, something that will undoubtedly attract the attention of both individual creators and professional teams. Its ability to simplify complex tasks and generate quality content quickly makes it an option to seriously consider, especially for those of us already familiar with OpenAI tools. If we are subscribed to any of the ChatGPT plans, Sora is already at our disposal. We just need to log in, explore its tools, and be amazed by what we can create with just a few words.
