Xiaomi has entered the electric vehicle market with a bang, unveiling its new flagship model, the SU7 Ultra, which is positioned as a high-performance variant of its successful SU7.
Priced at $72,800 (529,900 RMB), the SU7 Ultra boasts an astounding powertrain capable of producing 1,526 horsepower, making it an attractive alternative to the Tesla Model S Plaid, which retails at a much higher price of $112,000 in China and $95,000 in the U.S.
In a notable drag race, the SU7 Ultra bested the Model S Plaid despite initial struggles with traction.
U.S. manufacturers are lobbying the government to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles
This performance highlights Xiaomi’s ambition to disrupt the EV market, especially considering the SU7 Ultra’s acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.98 seconds. Such figures place it firmly on the map among elite performance vehicles, challenging preconceptions about high-powered electric sedans.
The standard SU7, which has already carved a significant niche in the market by delivering over 20,000 units per month and surpassing the Tesla Model 3 in sales, has set the foundation for its more powerful sibling. With a backlog of over 30 weeks on orders, it’s clear that consumer interest in Xiaomi’s electric vehicles is accelerating as fast as the cars themselves.
As part of a burgeoning landscape of EV makers in China, including competitors like Nio and BYD, Xiaomi’s impressive rise has put American automakers on high alert. Reports indicate that U.S. manufacturers are lobbying the government to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, fearing the impact of this emerging competition on the market.
This rapid growth in the Chinese EV sector suggests that Xiaomi and its contemporaries are not just here to compete but potentially to redefine the market landscape, making it an exciting time for consumers and industry observers alike.
