If until now it was expected that Nintendo Switch 2 would be released during the last quarter of 2024, according to journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, along with several other sources confirming what he says, the console will be released during the first quarter of 2025. A brief delay that would be within expectations. But it has not been well received by shareholders.
According to Bloomberg’s report, Nintendo’s shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange have fallen by up to 8.8%, settling at a 5.8% loss in value. This comes after reaching a record high last week, reaching 8,874 yen, around 55 euros at the exchange rate, following the leak of the release of Nintendo Switch 2 for this year. After the drop, Nintendo’s shares have fallen to 8,410 yen, around 52 euros. A very high figure for Nintendo, but it represents a decline.
Although this decline may continue further if Nintendo does not announce new games for the second half of the year to cover the absence of its console, this does not mean that there is not a good reason for the delay in the console’s release. If we take into account the information that has reached us, if Nintendo Switch 2 does not arrive until 2024, it would be because Nintendo would be looking to have more high-quality first-party games for the console’s launch. A move that would align with the company’s interests.
Why? Because historically, a good catalog of exclusive games released with the console has helped boost its sales. If Nintendo Switch 2 is released with more and better Nintendo exclusive games, it is more likely to drive more hardware sales. In addition, with that extra quarter, they may be able to secure some more third-party releases. This may cause their stock prices to fall in the short term, but if that’s the case, it is likely to benefit them in the medium and long term. And also our ability to enjoy their new console.
