The beginning of the end: GAME UK says goodbye to second-hand games

I remember the day I got the membership card from the famous video game store GAME. I went with my mother, since at that time I was underage, and after she became a member, I was finally able to rent a second-hand game that I was really looking forward to: Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, for Nintendo DS (not much is said about how much I enjoyed that game).

Over the years, I rented and bought other second-hand games from GAME that interested me, searching for minutes among extensive piles of games where FIFA, Call of Duty, and Assassin’s Creed were abundant above all. These were moments that I remember fondly and that will soon be exclusive to the nostalgic memory of those of us who experienced it.

And as Eurogamer reports, the British division of this famous video game store, GAME UK, will no longer allow the exchange of physical games starting from February 16th. In this way, British users only have one month to sell their games at GAME and exchange them for gift cards or store credit (cash is also offered as an option in Spain, although the amount is always lower).

This would also apply, obviously, to the purchase of second-hand games, although it is not clear if the units in stock will stop being sold next month or will continue until the stock runs out.

It’s the chronicle of a death foretold: for several years now, the prices of second-hand games for sale at GAME have been sky-high, often almost on par with those of new games. With this decision, the sand in the hourglass is already starting to fall and it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the divisions worldwide (including the Spanish one) do exactly the same.
