Everything comes to an end, even manga. While it’s true that popular manga can last for many years and sometimes seem like they’ll go on forever, it doesn’t mean they won’t eventually come to a conclusion. It’s something we have to get used to. Ironically, the manga that’s coming to an end is one that is about to begin in another medium shortly after finishing on paper. This is quite unusual in the industry.

“Dungeon Meshi,” by Milky Way Ediciones, will release its final chapter on September 15th. This has been confirmed by the publisher Kadokawa, which listed the 107th volume of Harta magazine as the last in Ryoko Kui’s series.

Kui debuted “Dungeon Meshi” in the February 2014 issue of Harta magazine. Kadokawa has been responsible for publishing it in tankōbon format, compiling it into 12 volumes until August 2022, presumably concluding with a total of 13 volumes. The manga follows a group of adventurers who must journey deep into a dungeon to rescue a comrade devoured by a dragon. However, being as poor as church mice, their only means of survival is quite eclectic: devouring the monsters they encounter along the way.

Half parody of classic fantasy in the style of Dungeons & Dragons, especially in the vein of Western video games like Baldur’s Gate, and half manga comedy, “Dungeon Meshi” has been a discreet success but with a very loyal fan base. So much so that in January 2024, Studio Trigger, known for series like Kill la Kill and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, will debut an anime adaptation of the work on Netflix.

That’s why it’s a good time to jump on board and take the opportunity to read “Dungeon Meshi”. It’s a very fun manga and, most likely, it will become much more well-known starting in January than it is now.
