We had gone several years without new episodes of Black Mirror, and it is one of those series that is missed and even feels too short. The seventh season of Black Mirror, created by Charlie Brooker, will premiere on Netflix on April 10 and will feature six new episodes that promise to take viewers on a provocative journey through technology and its implications for human life. This installment includes the return of Cristin Milioti in a sequel to the acclaimed episode USS Callister, aired in 2017, where she will reprise her role alongside actors like Jimmi Simpson and Paul G. Raymond.
A new device that expands the mind
The recently released trailer shows a series of innovative and disturbing interactions with a circular device described as a mind expander, which promises to alter the neural structure of its bearer. This device allows users to interact with virtual environments and artificial intelligence figures that seem to have emotions, adding a new layer of complexity to the series’ narrative. In the trailer, characters like Will Poulter raise unsettling questions about the direction of technology, questioning its purpose and the potentially devastating consequences of these innovations.
Brooker has emphasized on several occasions the importance of developing software that elevates humanity, and during a panel at SXSW 2023, he criticized the limited capabilities of tools like ChatGPT. They only emulate content, without true understanding, he stated, referring to the ethical and creative challenges posed by artificial intelligence in contemporary storytelling.
The plot of the USS Callister sequel remains an intriguing mystery, mentioning that Robert Daly, the main character from the previous installment, is dead, but the troubles are just beginning for the new captain, Nanette Cole. With a cast that includes stars like Issa Rae and Paul Giamatti, the season promises to be a chilling reflection of technological advancements and their moral dilemmas.
