The wait is getting long for the HBO series The Last of Us, which is preparing for its second season, set to premiere on April 13 on HBO and Max. This new installment will introduce significant differences in the narrative compared to the acclaimed original video game. Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the series alongside Craig Mazin, revealed at a press conference that Abby’s background will be presented earlier, a necessary change since viewers do not play as her, unlike in the video game.
Different narratives adapted to the media
In The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020, players meet Abby through the gameplay experience, which creates an empathetic connection during the story’s development. However, in the series, the revelation of the context about Abby is anticipated to prevent the audience from waiting too long and to avoid potential information leaks. Druckmann emphasized that we need different tools in the series to provide that crucial information from the beginning.
The second season will feature several new characters, including Danny Ramirez as Manny and Tati Gabrielle as Nora, while the main actors from the first season, such as Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, return in their roles as Joel and Ellie. Additionally, other additions include Isabela Merced as Dina and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac.
Another notable difference is the physical representation of the character Abby. Unlike the version from the video game, which is more muscular and robust, Abby’s portrayal, played by actress Shannon Dever, will explore a greater vulnerability that is consistent with the series’ more dramatic approach. Mazin reflected on this variation, suggesting that there is an incredible opportunity to delve into someone who, although physically more vulnerable, has a stronger spirit.
