Come on, admit it: no matter how hardcore gamer you are, there have been times when you found yourself stuck on a screen, not knowing what the hell to do to move forward, and you resorted to a YouTube tutorial that tells you exactly what steps to take, what moves to make, and even what collectibles you missed along the way. There’s nothing wrong with that, no shame in it, it’s normal, and even video games are increasingly introducing the concept of a guide to help players.

Elden Guide

Everyone has needed a guide to finish Elden Ring at some point. Not only is there no shame in it, but Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game director, has said he respects it. In fact, he expects it. “Of course, players are going to consult guides, and there will be a lot of information on the Internet and their communities, where they have access to secrets and strategies.”

But of course, they “do not do or plan anything that has guidance as a mandatory requirement. In fact, we try to guide the player who is completely blind and progress in an organic way.” Neither of the two is mutually exclusive, anyway: you can intend for players to progress organically and at the same time make your game so difficult that there is no choice but to look at a guide to know how to progress.

It is not Miyazaki’s opinion, who believes that if you can’t progress without external help “there is room for improvement on our part, and we would like to try to embrace those players more in the future.” Next step, the Elden Ring DLC. We will have to see if it delivers on its promises and banish guides forever, right?
