“One of the best movies of the year“. That’s how we defined, just a few weeks ago, Civil War. The Alex Garland film that will be released on April 12th has received incredible reviews in its early screenings, and everything indicates that it will become one of the most acclaimed films of 2024.
However, not everything is good news. Garland, a highly recognized director for the wonderful Ex Machina, Devs, Annihilation, Men, or 28 Days Later, has admitted in an interview for The Guardian that he is seriously considering retiring after the release of this feature film. The problem? He no longer feels the same way about cinema.
A too big responsibility
“Nothing has changed. I am still in the same state. I do not plan to direct any film in the near future,” Garland comments. “The pressure does not come from money. It comes from the fact that you are asking people to trust something that, at first glance, does not seem very trustworthy. Like Alicia Vikander and Sonoya Mizuno trust that the nudity will be treated with consideration and respect… when cinema tends not to do so.”
The director adds that he has a huge responsibility that “literally keeps me awake at night“… and when your health is at stake, it seems best to step aside.
