Alex Garland is one of the most surprising directors and screenwriters in all of Hollywood. The filmmaker behind Annihilation, Ex Machina, Devs, Men, and 28 Days Later doesn’t hold back when it comes to playing with genre and turning it around, whether it’s in science fiction or horror, but his new film aims to reach even higher heights by delving fully into political criticism.

Garland has just released the Civil War trailer, a film in which we travel to a close United States where political tensions have become so great that a huge civil war is about to explode throughout the country. Basically, Garland presents a scenario in which everything we have seen in recent years explodes in an unprecedented way and, according to its trailer, its production is going to be something never seen before.

Introducing the war of a near future

Produced by A24, Garland’s film features a stellar cast. It is led by Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura, and they are joined by Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, Nick Offerman, and Sonoya Mizuno. Told from multiple points of view and leaving nothing unexplored, the film aims to make the audience reflect on everything that is happening in the United States today, while also playing with scenarios that may seem impossible but are actually not so much.

The release date for Civil War in the United States is set for April 26, 2024. On that day, we will see how a top-notch author like Alex Garland, always at the forefront of cinema, faces the biggest challenge of his career as a screenwriter and director. There is no doubt that we are facing a globally scaled event… and I’m not just talking about the civil war it presents.
